The right MLM Mentor can get your business into profit quickly by showing you how to generate endless leads for your MLM business and how to profit from the people that say no to you. A mentor needs to identify and help solve your most pressing challenges. For most network marketers, the top two problems are:

You are probably wondering exactly how mentoring works and if you can successfully work with a mentor that is in a different primary business opportunity. Right? OK. Let me answer both those questions.
How Does MLM Mentoring Work?
There are a couple of different scenarios to consider.
The dream scenario: The first (dream) scenario is that you join your very first network marketing company under an upline that has struggled, struggled, struggled and then discovered a path to success that the team is now replicating. (It is important that you join someone who has struggled and overcome, not someone with luck or a golden rolodex. Luck and big rolodexs don’t duplicate and this type of upline will only encourage you to turn over more rocks until you get lucky like they did.) This covers about 0.5% of all networkers so congratulations if this is you. You won’t need an outside MLM mentor.
The more probable scenario: This is your first or second network marketing company and you joined under an upline who is a friend, neighbor or product expert (like a registered dietitian promoting a nutritional product). The MLM company provides a “system” and your direct sponsor has helped connect you to leaders and events in their direct line of sponsorship that offer group coaching and training. You have purchased all the suggested brochures, presentations, business cards and replicated websites, but your business isn’t growing. You have driven across the state for events that got you emotionally fired up, but didn’t give you any “Monday morning” action items to turn your business into profit. Sound familiar?

- You are beginning to suspect that there are fundamental flaws in the recommended system.
- You have asked your upline and upline upline’s about alternate marketing methods and been told to stay the course.

If you answered yes to 5 or more questions, keep reading. For a mentoring relationship to be successful it is essential that the mentee (that’s you):
- Has sought out the advice of the mentor (not the other way around)
- Be open to new ideas
- Use reason and logic to make decisions (not pumped up emotions from luxury cars on stages)
- Believes in the integrity of the mlm mentor as having their best interests at heart
Number 1 is already taken care of because you found this website on your own. What about items 2,3 and 4? If you are not open to new ideas and don’t use rational decision making processes you should probably go get a job and not pursue the life on an entrepreneur. In business you have to be flexible and adaptable with an eye on changing market conditions or you’ll soon be out of business. (Can you say VCR manufacturer?)You should be actively seeking out ideas and shuffling them around in your head to decide what you think about them. The email mentoring series also addresses bullet #4. Trust in the integrity of your selected mentor is essential. You can usually tell after 5-10 interactions with someone if they are phony or trying to scam you. That is a vital role played by the email mentoring.
Lastly, you must select a mentor that has specific expertise and the ability to teach what she knows. You’ve probably learned this lesson the hard way by partnering with an upline that has only 1 month more experience than you do and/or has never coached or taught before.

Can I Work with a Mentor in a Different Primary Business?
I said at the beginning I would answer this question, so here is the brutally honest truth…
Any mlm mentor that agrees to a long-term coaching or mentoring arrangement with some outside their direct downline, probably isn’t making as much money as they say they are and needs the mentoring income to supplement their residuals. It simply is NOT in their best interest to engage in this behavior long term. (Yes I subscribe to the school of thought that says human beings are rationale creatures that never act altruistically for sustained periods without there being something “in it” for them.)
It is common to offer a free email or video coaching series or to offer some limited 1-on-1 coaching for the purposes of relationship building. (That’s why I have Home Income Formula and the $600 package). After reviewing all the training and laying down $600 any mentee should have a pretty solid idea of whether their current situation (company, upline, tree placement) is going to yield long-term walk-away residual income or not.
The mentor is overstepping her bounds by soliciting the mentee into their company and downline, so it is always on the mentee’s shoulders to inquire if they would like more information about why the mentor picked that opportunity and what the unique benefits are of joining the mentor’s personal team. (This method of doing business is called Attraction Marketing).

Ultimately I want to work with people that want to work with me and where we have a shared economic interest. This should be your goal in network marketing as well. Life is too short to work with whiners and complainers or people you don’t respect and trust.
