Building your MLM business can be a frustrating experience if you aren’t experienced or skilled in advertising.  When I got involved in the MLM profession, I didn’t know how to advertise at all and as a result I struggled.

When I finally discovered that proper use of MLM advertising was the key that would allow me to accomplish my dreams in the Network Marketing Profession, I had a period of time where I was experimenting with different tactics.  Some of them worked, and continue to work today, and some of them I decided to never spend one ounce of energy on, ever again – and neither should you.

First off, let me share with you what you SHOULD NOT do.

Don’t use ANY ‘Blackhat’ MLM advertising tactics, ever.  The term ‘Black Hat’ refers to any attempt on the part of the marketer to ‘trick’ search engines or websites into thinking that you are something you’re not in an attempt to subversively generate traffic for your MLM business.

This is not only irritating for the thousands of people who click on pages that are supposed to have one thing and have another, but it is frustrating as a marketer to constantly be changing the search engines absolutely HATE blackhat MLM advertising.  Why do they hate it?  Because it is irritating.  Don’t you think?

A great example of ‘blackhat’ internet advertising is trying to ‘trick’ craigslist into accepting your home business ads in the Jobs section at craigslist.  Because there is so much subversive MLM advertising in the Jobs section at craigslist (MLM is not a job), it is a pain for even a legitimate company to post their ad to the Jobs section.  Plus, blackhat tactics never work for very long.

For a time, I thought that I could build a business through ‘black hat’ strategies.  The problem was, I realized it was unethical and couldn’t continue doing it after I saw the reasons why the search engines hated it.  Once I realized that, I discovered that the only way to build a business long term is through honesty, openness, and positive energy.

So what are some MLM advertising techniques that work?  Here I have listed some ‘White Hat’ SEO friendly MLM advertising techniques that can immediately help you in your business, listed in order of personal favoritism:

1.  Article Marketing – My absolute favorite way of marketing online is Article Marketing.  Using Article Marketing as your primary SEO MLM Advertising tactic will pay off big in the long run if you stick with it.  I have approximately 25% of the people who read my articles click through to my website, and ALL of that traffic is FREE.  Not only is it free, but once you create traffic with article marketing, the traffic is permanently there.  (This article you’re reading is a great example).  Articles gradually increase natural search engine traffic to your website, as well as increase your website ranking over time.  Try it.  You’ll love it if you love to write.

2.  Blogging – Search engines LOVE blogs!  If you don’t have a business blog – start one today.  Search engines love blogs for a good reason – it is because PEOPLE love blogs.  This allows you to target keyword phrases, dominate market niches, and take your MLM advertising to a personal, human level.  That being said, however, learn how to do a blog properly.  Study some of the best blogs out there and apply what you see in your own business – it will give you great results over time.

3.  Video Marketing – It’s hard to get a clear picture on exactly how much online traffic is directed towards video, but current estimates are anywhere around 30%-50% of ALL BANDWITH is video from services like YouTube, Viddler, and others.  The fastest way to dominate niche keywords online is to use video services to DOMINATE MLM advertising for your company.  The cool thing?  Video Marketing is free.  Video marketing can also be a huge pain in the butt, though, especially if you’re camera shy.  I give about 20% of my marketing effort to video marketing, and it brings me some great leads.

4.  Social Networking – The HOTTEST MLM advertising tactics this year are all built around social marketing, through social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and others.  It used to be that people would actually meet each other… Not any more – they unite on Facebook.  Seriously, Social Networking is the wave of the future and there are plenty of ways to generate 20-50 leads per day just using Social Media MLM advertising. 

5.  PPC – Pay Per Click advertising is the most efficient paid MLM advertising technique of all time.  It lets you target THE EXACT people that you are looking for, while they are searching for terms that YOU SELECT.  If you’re putting money in newspaper ads, stop it!  Put that money in Google Adwords – it will be MUCH better spent over the long haul.  PPC is the FASTEST strategy to generate leads, but it is also the most expensive.  Don’t attempt google adwords without first receiving training on how to do it properly.  Also, I prefer other methods.  That being said, most of the industry leaders use PPC aggressively to generate a significant amount of leads through google adwords. They have the cash flow to throw at it.  wouldn’t recommend it to someone new, but you should phase it in as you start generating positive cash flow in your business.

So where should you start?  First, you need a website that is attractive, simple, and branded with your own personal message.  Then, you need to pick ONE marketing strategy and DOMINATE that strategy.  FOCUS 100% of your attention on that strategy and work at it until you are generating 10 or more leads per day.  Then pick another strategy.

If you want to succeed in your online MLM business, it’s important that you get started with the right mindset and understanding. However, most people quit before they ever start. So decide.

Second, you’ve got to focus. If you’ve decided on building a particular company, you’ve got to put the blinders on and no matter what anyone else in the world says, you’ve got to focus on your company and stay consistent. People in network marketing are serial entrepreneurs, and often jump from company to company before they ever gain any real traction. If you want to build significant passive wealth, it at least makes sense to pursue ONE company only until you’ve gained the results and residual income that you’re looking for.

Third, you’ve got to get educated. If you want to build your business on the internet, you had sure better learn how to do it in a cost effective, proficient manner. If you’re going to do PPC advertising, become a MASTER at PPC. If you’re going to do article marketing, become a MASTER at creating compelling content. Get educated. I meet people all the time that will shell out $100 a month for six months on autoship products, but will not invest in a training course, a book or a marketing tool for half that amount. Network marketing is a business which is attracting more and more corporate professionals. Think you can succeed without an MLM-specific education? Think again.

Fourth, you’ve got to have passion. Look, there are a lot of great companies out there to work but does your company give you PASSION? If not, find one that does, and for heaven’s sake, STICK WITH IT.

What is your marketing strategy to build a successful MLM business? Do you know who your target market is? Do you know what your target market needs? Do you know where your target market hangs out? Do you know the words that resonate with your target market? You must have specific answers to these questions back by solid research and facts to ensure your long term success.

While you can build a small MLM business in a non-targeted way, talking to friends and family and everyone within 3 feet of you, you’ll never build a massive downline using this approach unless you get extremely lucky.  Instead of relying on luck, you need to rely on proven marketing strategies just like any ‘traditional’ business. It’s OK to play the lottery on the side, but the majority of your time should be spent on executing a specific marketing strategy.

Strategy First; Plan Second

Note that a marketing strategy must come before a marketing plan. The strategy is the WHAT and the plan is the HOW. For example, if you sell telecommunications services you might target cell customers of a particular carrier that has poor coverage in your area. That is the WHAT – the marketing strategy. In order to reach them, you might design a web page using your city name and the carrier’s name as keywords and include a ‘send me info on reducing my bill’ opt-in box. That is the HOW – the marketing plan. Without a strategy it is impossible to develop a plan that guides your activities.

Does your MLM marketing strategy need to be specific to be successful?

In a word – YES.

Marketing is the art of creating desire for a product or service. To create a desire for your product, you must connect the product to something the prospect wants. Once a prospect sees that your product is the solution to a specific problem that they care about, there should be no further objections as you close them.

1.       What problems do people care about?

Notice that all of your marketing activity must flow backwards from the problems people care about. Ask yourself, what problems do each of my products solve. Do they help slow the aging process? Do they provide income protection in the event of a disability? Do they reduce cholesterol? Do they remove wrinkles? Do they save money on phone services people buy anyway?  Do they teach online lead generation?

Remember, it has to be a problem people care about. And they must care enough about  the problem to take action. Someone whose doctor has just told them they have high cholesterol is (hopefully) ready to take action. Someone that paid $40 in overage fees last month is probably ready to take action. Someone whose brother just got injured and cannot work is probably ready to take action. A network marketer struggling to generate leads in the cold market is probably ready to take action.

2.       Which problems should your marketing strategy target?

After you list all the problems that your products and services can solve, get specific about which problems you will target. Pick 1 to 3 problems to target. Picking the problems is a personal choice influenced by several factors. The main factors you’ll want to consider are:

1)      The number of people with the problem . How large is the market?

2)      The severity of the problem. How motivated are people to solve the problem.

3)      The competitive intensity. How many other competing solutions are there for this problem?

4)      Your unique skills and expertise.

There is no right or wrong answer here. A small market with highly motivate people where you have unique expertise could easily outperform a large market with low motivational factors. This is one of the reasons that other network marketers are one of your best target markets. The market is concentrated and highly motivated.

3.      Where do people with these problems hang out?

At this point you are still developing strategy, not planning how to market, but you need to determine if you can reach people with the problem in groups or not. If yes, what are those groups and where do these people hang out. In the case of network marketers, they hang out at conferences, on training calls and at home parties.

The Internet is one of many answers to this question and for most network marketers it is the most powerful answer. The Internet is full of niches of people specifically looking for solutions to their problems. Use Google’s free External Keyword Research Tool to study the niches. How many people are searching for ‘lowering cholesterol’ or ‘save for college’ or ‘eliminate wrinkles’ or ‘free international calling’?

Lots of newbies waste an enormous amount of time and money designing web pages that no one traffics because they don’t invest in truly learning Internet marketing. Don’t make this mistake. You can be on the front page of Google, but you’ll need to be extremely focused on a specific niche and strategy to do it.

business-men-walkingYes, you read that correctly…no matter what networking company you are with, you have exactly 4 products to offer. I don’t care whether you think you have a single service or whether you have a 100 page product catalog, until you understand your 4 (and only 4) products, you’ll be spinning your wheels.

In promoting a home business opportunity your four products are: 1) The company’s products and services, 2) The company’s independent distributor/representative opportunity, 3) You the sponsor, and 4) Your support and training system.

Now let’s consider how unique each of your 4 products is.

1) The company’s products and services – I’m sure they are great. That’s why you joined the company in the first place. Direct sales companies generally have wonderful products. The trouble is, once a customer knows about the amazing products, they can get them from any one of thousands of distributors. While is is true that most customers will be loyal to you if you were the first one that familiarized them with the product and your prices and services are in line with the market, if a superior product from another company comes along they are gone.

2) The company’s independent distributor/representative opportunity – Again, I’m sure it is wonderful. That’s why you got involved in the first place. But again, just like with the products themselves, the opportunity is available from thousands of sources.

3) You the sponsor – Now we are getting into unique territory. There is only 1 you. You’ve got strengths and weaknesses and hopefully you are leveraging the strengths and continuing to work on your rough spots. Your prospect cannot get You from any other source. If they already want more and more and more of you, great, you have a tremendous personal brand. If not, your personal brand can be developed through blogs like this one :-)

4) Your support and training system – Within every networking company there are systems that don’t work, systems that work if you work them hard, and systems that provide relatively smooth travel to success with consistent, focused effort. The system you personally adopt and teach is a product in an of itself. Don’t take your upline’s word for it that his/her system is the best. Do your own research. In this Internet age, many home business playbooks are still exclusively based on warm market tactics and the 3-foot rule. The system is as much part of the product as YOU are. Make sure it is in the 21st century.

As you can see, the most unique product you have to offer your prospect is YOU followed by your support and training system. Your products are great, your company is great. YOU need to be greater still. So stop inviting your prospects to listen to your upline triple black platinum whatever. This activity only serves to further establish THEM as the leader. Instead, take charge of your team. YOU lead.  

Its the only product you have 100% control over anyway.
